Pros And Cons - 1042 Words

The United States of America produces the second highest rate of carbon dioxide emission per capita. We just barely trail China in this deadly race for energy that we call industrialization. â€Å"The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) warns that, given the current trends, energy-related emissions will increase by seventy percent by 2050† (Rogers). At this rate our planet is doomed to become a wasteland. Investigations have shown that inconceivable catastrophic changes will take place if the global temperature continues to rise. The polar ice caps are already melting, which can lead to rising sea levels. In addition, extreme weather such as droughts, floods, and storms will become a huge problem. The world will become†¦show more content†¦Is it not the terrible truth that nearly all of the United States is preoccupied with the acquisition of goods? Every child and adult alike ‘needs’ the latest and greatest iPhone or computer ev ery year or two. The goal of the big business enterprises, such as Apple and Microsoft, is to increase profit margin. Macs and PCs are made to last until the next model is released to the public. Children these days expect their parents to buy these devices that can cost up to or over one thousand dollars. Our nation must learn that consumerism is a natural and necessary thing, but must not be taken to the extreme. The normality of such a high level of consumeristic tendencies will lead to worldwide devastation. I would like to take this to a more personal, individualized level. The late, yet great, President John F. Kennedy said during his inaugural speech â€Å"...ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.† What can we ,as American citizens, do for the benefit of our country, or even the world as a whole? A start would be to focus more on the massive use of electricity daily, and the repercussions of these actions. â€Å"The total embodied CO2 (carbon dioxide) emission per household was about 37 metric tons of which about 65% was from direct energy† (Shammin 171). Moving forward, such high numbers will no doubt lead to catastrophic events that will devastate this planet we live on.
